Utilities
Challenge
Post-installation CCTV surveys on a new residential development revealed that several sewer lines had developed "pipe bellies" (sags) due to settlement in weak alluvial soils. These defects caused standing water and prevented the utility company from adopting the asset. Excavating to repair the pipes would have required closing estate roads and disrupting new residents.
Solution
Geobear designed a precision geopolymer injection scheme to lift the sagged pipe sections back to the correct gradient. The work was completed entirely from the surface in just 8 days, with zero road closures or excavation.

On new housing estates—particularly those built on improved ground or reclaimed land—settlement of utility trenches is a common headache. When the bedding material settles, the sewer pipe sags, creating a "belly" that holds water and collects debris. Utility companies (like DEWA or ADDC) will refuse to take over (adopt) these assets until the defect is fixed, leaving the developer with ongoing liability.
On a new housing development in the North West, post-installation CCTV surveys revealed that several sewer lines beneath estate roads had developed pipe bellies. These defects, identified by standing water within the sewers, were the result of settlement in weak underlying soils.
The sewers were founded above 7–10 m of very soft alluvium, offering little natural support. Over time, ground weakness caused sections of pipe to sag, creating hydraulic inefficiencies and blocking adoption of the assets by the local utility provider.
Five separate locations across the estate required urgent remediation to reinstate the long-term stability of the sewers while keeping the roads fully operational.
The engineering challenges were clear:
Traditional excavation was dismissed as too invasive, slow, and costly. An alternative was required that could be installed from the surface, restore gradients, and avoid disruption to the community.
Geobear implemented a precision lifting strategy.
Surface injection: Small diameter tubes were installed from the road surface to varying depths (0.1m to 3.1m below the pipe invert).
Controlled lift: Expanding geopolymer was injected beneath the pipe haunches. The expansion force compacted the soil and gently lifted the pipe back to its design level.
Real-time verification: CCTV cameras monitored the pipe interior during injection. As the pipe lifted, the standing water flowed away, providing immediate visual confirmation of the correction.
Geobear process leaves minimal evidence in road way other than small holes that are subsequently grouted.
