Loss of ground: As water flows through a gap in the piles, it carries fine sand and silt with it. This creates large voids behind the shoring wall.
Settlement risk:

The ground loss causes settlement in the adjacent zone, threatening neighboring towers, roads, and utilities (the "zone of influence").

Project delays: Flooded excavation pits stop work, requiring expensive and continuous dewatering that can draw down the water table further, exacerbating the problem.

Common Leak Points:

  • Clutch interlocks: Gaps in sheet pile clutches due to hard driving or declutching.
  • Pile overlap: "Shadows" or gaps between male/female secant piles where verticality tolerances were missed.
  • Tie-back anchors: Water tracking along ground anchors or soil nails.
