Brass foundry wall ground strengthening

Challenge

Ground instability behind a historic foundry wall caused cracking and loss of support, requiring stabilisation without excavation or disruption to adjacent operational and heritage assets.

Solution

Geobear delivered targeted geopolymer injection to fill voids, increase soil stiffness and reinstate lateral support, stabilising the wall with minimal surface disturbance.

Ground strengthening behind retaining wall

Targeted injection design

Non‑intrusive method

No excavation or structural rebuild

Background

The brass foundry wall formed part of a retained boundary structure associated with a historic industrial site. Signs of cracking and movement indicated that ground conditions behind the wall had deteriorated, reducing lateral support.

Loss of fines due to water ingress and long‑term consolidation can create voids and weaken retained soils. If unaddressed, continued movement risked further structural distress and potential impact on adjacent operational areas.

Challenge

Excavation behind a historic masonry wall would have required extensive access, temporary works and potential dismantling, increasing risk to heritage fabric and surrounding infrastructure.

A stabilisation approach was required that could improve ground strength and restore support while limiting vibration, plant footprint and disruption to the site’s ongoing use.

Solutions

Geobear developed a precision geopolymer injection programme tailored to the identified instability zones. Small‑diameter injection points were installed at predetermined locations behind the wall based on site investigation findings.

The two‑component geopolymer was injected at depth, where it expanded to fill voids, bind loose soils and increase stiffness. Controlled expansion reinstated lateral support without inducing detrimental movement in the masonry structure.

The compact equipment footprint enabled delivery within constrained access conditions, avoiding the need for excavation or structural alteration.

Results

Ground support behind the wall was reinstated, mitigating the risk of further cracking and movement. The intervention stabilised the structure without excavation, preserving the historic fabric.

Works were completed within the agreed programme, providing a technically robust strengthening solution aligned with long‑term asset management objectives.
