Challenge
Embankment instability along a heritage railway threatened track integrity and required ground strengthening without major excavation or prolonged disruption to rail operations.
Solution
Geobear delivered targeted geopolymer injection to stabilise the embankment, increase ground strength and protect track alignment with minimal environmental and operational impact.
Works coordinated around operational timetable
Precision geopolymer injection
Minimal excavation and reduced carbon footprint
Sections of embankment supporting the Severn Valley Railway had experienced instability due to weakened ground conditions. Loss of strength within the slope posed a risk to long‑term track performance and required timely intervention.
Given the heritage nature of the railway and environmental sensitivities, the solution needed to minimise disturbance to surrounding land and infrastructure.
Traditional embankment reconstruction would have involved significant excavation, heavy plant and extended possession periods.
The client required a faster, lower‑impact alternative that could strengthen the ground in situ while preserving the character and operation of the railway.
Geobear implemented a controlled geopolymer injection programme to improve the mechanical properties of the embankment soils.
Small‑diameter injection tubes were installed at designed depths to introduce a two‑component geopolymer. Upon mixing, the material expanded, filling voids, increasing soil density and enhancing shear strength within the treated zone.
The lightweight, fast‑curing material enabled rapid stabilisation without the need for excavation or large‑scale reconstruction works.
Embankment stability was restored, improving resilience and protecting track alignment.
The works were delivered efficiently with minimal environmental disruption, providing a durable and sustainable alternative to traditional earthworks.
