Geobear’s clay subsidence project named finalist at the Ground Engineering Awards

Geobear, in collaboration with Surrey County Council, has been recognised as a finalist at the 2024 Ground Engineering (GE) Awards. The nomination is for their innovative work on a section of the A323 road in Surrey, employing a unique clay subsidence solution. This project involved the development of a clay geopolymer injection solution to address severe undulations in a portion of the road, caused by deep-lying shrinkable clay.

This project marks the first application of a geopolymer design for clay soil stabilisation at depth in the highways sector. Leveraging its extensive experience from the residential property sector, Geobear worked closely with Surrey County Council to design and implement the scheme that would reduce the shrink-swell potential of the soil. The outcome of the project drew comparisons to the advantages of Geobear’s residential solutions, delivering a swift, minimally disruptive approach. This ensured that the road, along with nearby businesses and a school, could remain operational throughout the process.

Surrey County Council and Ringway Eurovia (the main contractor) were delighted with the outcomes. Furthermore, this is also being considered for an award by the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation.
